A Prospect doesn't believe the SEO Gurus!
I went to a local solicitors (law firm) in Manchester the other day following
the letter I sent to the Managing Partner just before Christmas. In a very nice way
I asked him why his company, with a turnover of £32M ($45M) could not be
found if "Manchester solicitors" was keyed into Google.
He was intrigued and also I guess slightly annoyed by this - after all it's both
business and personal pride - speaking to his friends he can say "have you
seen our entries on the first page of Google"? He passed me to another person
with the title Business Development Director. Now, I have years of sales background
and assumed that this means you have an interest for generating new business. However,
it actually means that you focus on the logo, brand image and literature - assuredly
then business will naturally follow.
Well, I thought that the 20 to 40 people a day keying in "Manchester solicitors"
would be real business that I would want to have now. Maybe, I am missing the point,
but having a nice brand can surely never outstrip the front page on a
Google search. He also says he has come across numerous SEO companies and suggested
that SEO Gurus were not unique and many people can get 2 out of the first 10 results on
the Google front page.
Well this got us thinking plus suggested a challenge to our very manhood (well, maybe not
but I am trying to build the excitement for the reader!). So we are in the process
of creating a web-site for those well-known solicitors "Sue, Grabbit and Runne", the very
famous Manchester law firm. The idea being that we will create a spoof site and
prove we can actually do what we say on the tin. Hopefully, by this time next month we
will be searchable on MSN, Google I believe will come in some 3 months after MSN,
as we are using our new domain to host the site. We hope you will see how we are doing
by keying in "Manchester solicitors" to MSN and then Google. I will keep you updated
on how we are doing.
And now our poem
Written by my partner, reflecting the solicitor's site from the SEO Gurus.
Down in the dingy depths under Darkness Hall,
Logos are projected onto dank slippery walls,
Flickering furtively promising, but never quite right,
So they toil toward closure, night after musty night,
Pointless announcing existence until Logo is cool,
When pre perfection viewers would deem us pure fools,
So we beaver away, on the brand brochure and style,
Losing sight of the initiative we lose all the while,
At last emerging blinking triumphant, into cold light of day,
When all our potential customers have long since run away,
All the bleeding and wronged, all the slandered and fired,
Have been online and searching, if they have not expired,
Couldn’t wait any longer for their lost Hamelin to pipe,
Logo now perfected and branded, come visit our site,
No, they found other pipers, heard other strident tunes,
Visited non Logod websites, in non branded rooms,
Speed of the essence, quick justice meted and paid,
Who could have been yours, had thee not been afraid,
To break from convention, heraldic motifs and dust,
To shake off apathy, to be shiny steelike, not rust,
So the Logo is perfect, the brochure it is sound,
But there's nobody viewing, noone is ever around,
The websites graphically brilliant, if a book you would bind it,
Shame without any indexing no one will ever find it,
You may hang bannered Logos, and print them on cards,
But your online emporium will never need any guards,
So before you ditch Google in favour your coats of arms,
Think twice on what heraldry might do lesser harm,
No use in your photos and tradition, plus legendary name,
If someone else is clicked when you should be in the frame.
